Forest School
“An understanding of the natural world and what’s in it, is a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.” Sir David Attenborough
Intent
Our Forest School curriculum is designed to foster the holistic development of Reception children, aligning with our core values of curiosity, kindness, inclusivity and excellence. It provides a unique opportunity for children to engage with the natural world, encouraging them to take supported risks and grow into resilient, confident, independent, and creative learners. The curriculum is tailored to meet the individual needs of each child, evolving as their skills, confidence, and understanding grow. Through hands-on, experiential learning in the natural environment, children have the space and time to explore, create, and develop their interests. Our approach encourages educators to observe and facilitate rather than direct, allowing children to lead their learning journey. The Forest School setting, surrounded by mature trees, plants, and bushes, creates a serene space for children to connect deeply with nature. The distinct rules and expectations of the Forest School environment promote curiosity, investigation, and the freedom to apply and develop new skills in a way that differs from indoor learning.
Implementation
Each week, Reception children participate in a three-hour Forest School session at Hackney Marshes, led by trained Forest School Practitioners and supported by HNPS staff and parents. These sessions are meticulously planned, with comprehensive risk assessments ensuring a safe yet challenging environment. The sequential nature of the sessions is designed to build on the progression of skills and knowledge, while the dynamic outdoor environment naturally enhances learning through its ever-changing landscape. Children experience the full spectrum of seasons and weather conditions, adhering to our belief that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. This immersive experience allows children to explore their world using all their senses, fostering independence, language development, physical activity, and emotional well-being. The Forest School sessions are integrally linked to the curriculum, employing holistic and participative practices. Children are encouraged to take risks, make choices, and engage in problem-solving activities that build confidence and competence. Educators support the children in reflecting on their experiences, helping them to set goals and develop ideas, which often evolve into long-term projects both in the forest and back in the classroom. Activities such as den building, sensory walks, foraging, tool use, and campfire cooking are just a few examples of how children engage with and learn from the natural environment. The Forest School nurtures a collaborative culture, promoting resilience, respect, and a deep connection with nature.
